Herbster Wisconsin Annual Smelt Fry.
Herbster Wisconsin is located on the south shore of Lake Superior. Fishing, logging and farming are what most folks do.
Smelt. A small slender fish that return each year to the shores of Lake Superior to spawn. Each spring hundreds of smelters flock to the shore to net these fish. This years smelt run has not started yet. I would guess it should start within the next week to ten days. Picture will follow.
Volunteers in the kitchen breading / battering the smelt in preparation for the deep fat frying. This volunteer has a handful of the little critters getting battered.
Hundreds attend this annual event. In Wisconsin an "all you can eat" fish fry will always attract a large hungry crowd.
Here's what we all travel to Herbster Wisconsin for. Smelt, bake beans, coleslaw and fresh bread.

Do you eat them guts, heads and all?
More importantly, do they taste good?
I love fried fish, hush puppies, cole slaw and baked beans. Damn, I'm making my mouth water just thinking about it.
When I worked at the wildlife hospital, each year Mr. Pop and I would sponsor a fish fry on the beach to make money for the not for profit hospital. The food tasted extra good after being cooked there at the beach park. The smell of fish frying at the beach is a rocket for the appetite.
No not quite everything. The head is cut off and the guts removed. The rest is cook and eaten, I like mine crunchy. The tail it self is like a chip.
I'm originally from the south Boston area so cooking and eating fish on the beach is still one of my favorites.
Nothing like a clam boil. Talk about eating it all head, guts and bellies.
Well we just lost most of the other readers.
One more thing....a cold beer.
