2013 Early Ice. Chequamegon Bay.

New ice fishing shelter.

Early ice fishing. Some are driving vehicles. I prefer a little more ice. For now this is my way on and off ice. If the cold weather holds out we should be driving by next week. It is shaping up to be a great season. For now the bay has 9 to 12" of ice with little or no snow cover.

Setup and fishing.

This was a great early ice fishing day.  It has been a couple of years since the "brothers-in-laws" have been ice fishing together. Hopefully we will get to do this more often.

Ice fishing isn't only about catching fish. It's about enjoying the day and the company. Having fun is always in the cards.

A view to the Northwest. Looking toward Washburn Wisconsin.

Captured air bubbles in this early season black ice.

It doesn't get much better than this. A great way to end a day out on Chequamegon Bay. And yes we did catch some fish.

Cold, snowy and blowing. A view from inside.

Setup and ready to fish.

Close quarters. All the essentials. Vexilar, waxies, shinners, coffee and of course fish. This perch is what we like to see come up through the ice. This is what I would call a "jumbo".  At least for Chequamegon Bay over the last few years.

A view to the Southwest. The Oredock and Chequamegon Hotel.

Sunset as seen from inside the T-P.

Sunset over Barksdale WI.
The more I look at this photo the more I like it.

And this photo.

Fished with family and friends today.

A short video of a sunset on Chequamegon Bay. I ice fished with my brother-in-law, nephew and an old fishing buddy. We call him "the chief" as in fire chief (retired).

Another warm sunny day. Perch were biting today. My brother-in-law caught a coho on a tip-up. It was the first flag I've seen in several trips out. Fish on the ice.

A weekend at "tornado alley" aka Herbster Wisconsin.

Our new mobile home away from home.

Lake Superior Herbster, Wisconsin. Temps in the low 50s. Water temps about the same. Wind 20-24 mph gusting to 28 mph.

Herbster campground.

Campsite.

Fall flowers.

Out for a midday walk bundled up for the weather.

Yet at the same time just down the beach......it must have been....warmer?

Tonight's sunset.

Both of these photos were taken from the parking lot of Ashland's new bigbox superstore.

An afternoon and evening along the bay.

This porcupine was sunning itself in the afternoon sun just west of the head of the bay.

Any vantage point will work.

This adult Bald Eagle was using the high point in the bay to watch the activity.

I never tire watching these large raptors.

Moving on.

Look who's doing all the work. The women!

Look who's supervising. The men! These guys were yelling out directions from shore. Cold beer and warm fire. It's great work if you can get it.

This is why we live here.
