Tern island and pier.

This is the remnant of one of the many piers that reached out into the Chequamegon Bay during the logging and iron ore era. The pilings from this pier at Sunset Park (Pamida Beach)are more visible this year than any other year in recent memory. The water level in the bay is at the lowest level I can remember since arriving here in 1978. The larger structure at the distant end is called "Tern Island". It is the yearly nesting ground for the Common Tern inhabiting the Chequamegon Bay area.

There's something beautiful about those posts. I bet the island is loud during nesting season.

I've always been amazed at their resiliency. In the winter with the ice cover and in the spring with the "push" ice. They have endured for multiple decades. On the same bay are modern engineered structures that seem to need major repair every decaded. Go figure!

Tern island is about 1000' off shore so most of the noise is to far away but the flight activity over the island is something to see.
